Family Photo Shoot

Here's few images from a wonderful family I see once a year - I find it a tremendous privilege to be able to see how families grow, expand, how the little babies return as toddlers, running around the studio and the older siblings try to lead by example. It makes me feel part of a community and more importantly I feel I have captured snippets of childhood they will be able to look back on with fond memories in times to come.

I think I came to the conclusion that this shouldn't really be called a blog but more of a memoir of recent shoots. As people who may have read this blog will realize that I tend to write it at a slow pace. It's a discipline thing - I get the images off to clients first and writing seems to come last. However, I do love to share the images and hope it doesn't matter if there is a slight delay in them making their way to my humble wall of fame. Silver Skye's Baby Photography Session

Cute little Silver Skye is a first little munchkin to try out 'sitting' in a basket I originally bought to place newborn babies on top of. I padded it out with a thick blanket to ensure she was snug and well supported and it looks like it worked a treat which is fab as babies who are too small to sit up get to be in a more interesting pose than just on their tummies or resting on their backs. It did help that Skye seemed to be really enjoying her baby photography session and was a well behaved little lady. Must take after her parents who were very relaxed and great at entertaining Silver who rewarded us with lots of smiles.

Baby William's Session

I have finally hung up my new coloured backdrops - there was quite a delay because there were no attachments left in the whole country and a long waiting list to receive them. I hope it will give parents more options for lovely colourful images as well as the white, gray and black colours I already offer. William was a giggly and an inquisitive little man who didn't mind having his outfits changed, being tickled or picked up and moved around the studio. I think it shows in the photographs and here's a little preview fom his baby photography shoot.

Baby Markus was in such a hurry to meet his parents he popped out three weeks early!!! Amaia Kids Store's Autumn Collection

Amaia and Segolene offer unique children's fashion at their shop in Chelsea. I always look forward to see their new collection and this time I was not disappointed - there was colourful knitwear, fabulous corduroy dresses, luxuriously warm and elegant coats.

The kind of clothing one can find in Amaia's shop feel like they have been lifted out of Frances Hodgson Burnett's children's classic - 'A Little Princess' (before Sara becomes poor), lovingly made for special young ladies and boys.

As we all know each child is a unique individual and sometimes I am surprised how many different personalities I encounter in my studio or on location shoots. Some children are excited to be in a new environment, some are a bit shy when they arrive and warm up later and some are totally unmoved by my or their parents efforts to get a smile out of them. Baby Lauren is a wise little owl and gave us half a smile in the end - thank you young lady you were smashing!

Sasti Children's store third photo shoot

Rosie who owns Sasti Children's store on Portobello Road has brought little Freddie to model her latest collection. The session at our studio in Ealing had it's ups and downs but I think the results are fabulous! Patience, understanding and lots of give and take guarantees amazing results even from the most reluctant little mites. Well done Freddie and congratulations to Rosie on such a Fab collection of funky kids clothing.

Arthur and Josef's Session at Babes and Butterflies Studio

Arthur and Josef came to the studio with their lovely parents a while ago. As often happens during the sessions, it's easier to capture a wonderful image of a child on their own. Add a sibling, a friend or a family member and things always get a bit tricky. When one child is in place, the other takes off like a rocket in the opposite direction, point a camera towards them and some kids try their best not to play ball. I should know as my little man is as easy to photograph as a snow leopard during a blizzard.

So here they are - lovable Arthur and giggly Josef.

Congratulations to Elke and Dario on the birth of sweet little Raphael. Elke came to the studio for a pregnancy shoot a few months ago and before we knew it she was back for her babies' newborn portrait. Raphael is only a week old but seemed so alert - his eyes were wide open and he even managed to smile a few times. They are such a lovely family and I feel very privileged to have met them and been able to share their special moments with them.

Little Gia was lots of fun as at 10 months old she can crawl around pretty well but not fast enough for me not to be able to get fabulous images of her. She arrived with her mum on what felt like the hottest day so far this year which meant the portable fan was on it's highest speed setting. Cute little Isabelle

Seems that Isabelle is quite a popular name for a girl as I have photographed two cute little babies with that name, just weeks apart. This Isabelle is one year old and this was her birthday treat. She's very cute and an inquisitive little lady - the huge flower was a great source of entertainment for her and myself also. Mum and dad were lovely and helped out big time which ensured we got these fabulous images.

Erza - Little Model in the Making

Sweet Erza was a great little model. The photography session was her birthday treat and she loved every second of it. New Studio Backdrop

I have ordered a new backdrop with a lovely aquamarine tint to it as I thought kids look really sweet and quite funky, mixed with cheeky when photographed on brightly coloured backgrounds.

Well at least I hope it does. Either way, it opens up more options for me to create the right kind of portrait with the aim to reflect the individual child's personality. I am tempted to pick up some pastely yellows and maybe light cornflower blues too! Meantime here's a few portraits on the deep aquamarine one.

Baby Katherine's second session

I met little Katherine when she was just a month old. There is a gallery with the photographs from her newborn photography shoot on my website. It seems that apart from being six months older nothing has changed about her personality - she's still very giggly and a fabulous little model. From the photographs it certainly looks as though she enjoyed her photo session as much as she did the first one. It's great to see babies become toddlers and I feel privileged to have such a wonderful job. Thank you Tracie and Katherine for making it such a fun photo shoot.

Max's Baby Photography Shoot

Max made the newborn photography shoot so easy for me - he was just one month old at the time but so alert and so smiley for his age. Most babies nod off to sleep or hardly ever smile during a shoot but Max cooed and wiggled his legs and arms about with a definite look of pleasure on his happy face. I remember photographing his older brother when he was the same age - he kept his cool through the shoot, looked at the camera plenty but there were no smiles! I love to photograph babies and whenever they decide to smile, even for a split second, I count that to be a huge bonus.

Montpelier Park from my studio window

Montpelier Park is a tiny gem in the heart of Ealing. This is the view from my studio window I see everyday. It's as lovely as one can hope for living in London and my heart sings when I stand on the balcony with my cup of tea, enjoying this explosion of light and varying shades of green. Early in the morning there might be a couple of joggers making their way round the loop but mainly all I see is just amazing sunlight sneaking it's way round the variety of tall and not so tall trees and birds. Mind you, the birds kick off at around 4am so, I hear them well before I can see them.

In the winter when it snowed the park was heaving with activity. Families, young children and giggly teenage girls were all busy making their own unique snowmen. There were even families of snowmen lined up in the middle of park. The snow made everything so bright that even at midnight I could see a young couple having a snowball fight. I think we all loved that day and will talk about it for many years to come.

Now that the park is lovely and green I have started to mix my studio family portrait sessions with outdoor photography in the park. Little children, despite everyone's effort, do get bored in the studio after a while of shooting and a 15 minute walk in the park is a great way for everyone to relax, the kids to run around and for me to take some fun photographs of children just being themselves.

Peonies at my studio

My favourite flowers are out in bloom and I have some sitting right here on the window ledge of my studio. It's funny, but when you buy peonies you never quite know if they will turn into double petal giants or just simple 'singlets', which resemble poppies, just like the ones I got. I guess since I like them so much, I ought to read up about them and know my buds! These seem to have particularly vibrant colours which I didn't Photoshop but feel I almost have to wear sunglasses to look at. Vintage seems to be in for me at this moment in life and I hope you'll like my rendition of a Victorian sepia photograph.

Birthday Boy

Oscar's birthday celebrations have gone on for nearly a month. There were lots of gifts which kept arriving through the post from friends and relatives as well as the endless train wagons and tracks dad had ordered. Our friendly postman found it most amusing. Oscar kept asking me for his 'Happy Cake'. Like any little child he loves his sugary treats which so far I have manged to keep to a minimum. I looked online to try to find a recipe for a cake any novice cook could russle up.

Nigella's chocolate and banana cake seemed easy enough and had lots of positive comments from delighted ladies (didn't see any comments from men) which made me slip my apron on and get going on Oscar's yearly treat. The result was light and fluffy with just the right amount of chocolate (I did add a bit more on top). As soon as Oscar laid his eyes on it he let out a 'Happy Cake' whisper which sounded like euphoria mixed with a sign of relief that his cake has finally arrived.

Baby Henry

I would lie if I said that all baby photo shoots went smoothly. Henry was teething and had a cold at the same time which meant he wasn't too interested in having his photograph taken. He was cute and very fast. Had he been any faster I would have had to get a bike to catch up with him. His parents - Carolyn and Stephen and I, tried all the tricks anyone who works with or has any children keeps up their sleeves for those unhappy days. A walk round our little park cheered him up and here's Henry with the cheekiest smile I have seen in a while. It's great to be able to switch from family photography in a studio to outdoor natural light portraits thanks to Montpelier Park which I can see from my studio window.

Vincent Shoe Store Photo Shoot

I am not the most prolific of bloggers but I do get to mention most shoots sooner or later. Vincent kids shoe store with 2 outlets in London was a great little shoot. Kids were rearing to go and we almost had to restrain them from being if front of the camera - I wish I had that problem more often! The shoes are very comfy and in great colours which is appealing to both parents and children alike. I just came back from their shop in Westfield centre and I loved the shopping experience.

There are fabulous mini armchairs for little ones to sit in, a very cool car they can ride on (I couldn't get Oscar off of it), the shoes are displayed at kid's eye level which enables them to see what's on offer and the music played is soooo relaxing. Mary who served us was very helpful and softly spoken and made it a very pleasurable experience indeed. The only thing that was missing was some fun photographs of kids wearing Vincent shoes but then I know Katarina has already chosen some from the photo shoot we had at our studio in Ealing and they should be up on the walls very soon - can't wait to see which images she has chosen.

Little Artist in the Making?

As Oscar's second birthday was approaching Lawrence and I and grandparents went on a mission to get him wonderful presents he would really enjoy. Dad decided that trains which went round wooden tracks were 'the' toy every boy should have. These modern trains are amazing - they can whistle, stop on demand, go backwards, you can even hear the announcements being made as the train pulls up at a train station. Oscar loves it but I sometimes wonder if Lawrence has more fun setting it up for him.

My choice was an artist's board which is a blackboard on one side, white board on the other and you can reel some paper over it too, which means kids can either use crayons or paint on the paper or chalks on the board. I got the idea from my friend Kristina whose little girl Maddie seems to love it too. Her photographs of Maddie and dad painting together were so lovely, I immediately decided this was the present I had to get for Oscar. Here's Oscar's in action and what fun it was too.

One month old baby Will

I am just back from skiing hence the small delay in sharing these fabulous images of one month old baby Will with you. The little man did so well - kept his eyes wide open, wiggled his little legs, waved his arms around a bit and generally didn't seem to be phased by anything during his first studio photography experience. I don't usually play any music during baby photography sessions but this time I thought it would be great to listen to Air's Moon Safari album while Will was taking some time out to feed - it went down a treat! He loved it and so did his parents. A note for other parents - you are welcome to bring your own music with you or we can choose something out of my library.

Sasti Children's store studio photo shoot.

Sasti children's shop in Portobello Green, just off Portobello Road will be launching a new website soon and I have been shooting their new spring/summer collection. Two and a bit year old Ellany Rose was a real star - as soon as the music came on she danced, jumped, twirled and occasionally had a little rest. She chased balloons, did a little teapot dance and showed us how the little star twinkles. The clothing is colourful, designed by Rosie Life and all made here in Britain. My little Oscar is a fan and it's great to see people smile when they see him sporting Sasti's colourful outfits, especially during cold, grey winter days. It's great to be able to combine baby and child photography with shooting kids fashion. I am looking forward to the summer and being able to do location photography which is so much fun for both the children and the photographer alike.

One never knows what to expect when you have a booking for a studio session with more than one child. The sisters were sweet, smiley and very easy to photograph. The parents were pretty cool customers too and helped me get the best out of the session. There was singing, dancing, tickling and raspberry blowing. Tambourine shaking was in full swing and monkey glove puppet was out. Evie took off wearing mum's shoes and Eloise followed the proceedings with her huge eyes. Well done everyone and here's few images from the day. Baby or child photography sessions are fun and each one is soooooooo different from another.

Alicja - Christening Photographs at our Ealing studio.

I have been so busy recently I feel I have neglected my blog. I have so many new wonderful photographs and experiences to share I promise I'll pick up pace and write more often now.

I've had my first Christening studio session last weekend! Little Alicja was adorable and had the cutest outfit one can imagine. Her dress had pink flower petals between her skirt and the outer layer netting - so sweet! She was no trouble at all and stared straight into the lens. The parents wanted to have a traditional portrait taken with the godparents and Alicja however, it wasn't hard to persuade them to take some fabulous photographs of the little mite on her own. I love the results and hope you'll agree, she's just stunning.

Amaia Kids Store Photo Shoot

The photo shoot for Amaia Kids Store in Chelsea went fabulously well! The new collection of clothing is beautiful, well made and the fabrics were of very high quality. It was a pleasure to photograph it and see it on the stores' website already! The were children were fun, full of life and in every nook and cranny of my studio - it was also great to work with older children for a change.
Babes and Butterflies Photography website has photographs of babies, children and pregnant ladies but in all honesty I enjoy photographing people whatever age they are and find retirees especially fascinating - their faces and bodies tell a story of the life they have led and usually they have a story or two to tell to an interested ear.
